Etymology
Bruxelles comes from an old Dutch name Broekzele, where broek means 'marsh' or 'wet land' and -sel or -zele means 'home' or 'settlement'. So Bruxelles originally meant a 'home in the marsh', and a helpful way to remember it is to think of the English word 'brook', which means 'a small stream', to picture wet ground and water in the city's early landscape.
