Etymology
Brisbane comes from the name of Sir Thomas Brisbane, a British governor; an early explorer named the local river after him and the town by that river later took the same name. The place also had an Aboriginal name, Meanjin, used by the local people long before, which helps you remember that Brisbane grew up beside a river.
