Morphology
BD = B + D
This is an initialism (letters stand for 'Blu-ray Disc'); the letters themselves are not productive English morphemes, so the written form does not transparently convey the meaning to learners.
Etymology
BD is short for Blu-ray Disc, a shiny disc for high-definition movies. It is called Blu-ray because it uses a 'blue' laser to read much more data than a DVD, so a BD gives a clearer picture and sound.
