Aryan originally came from arya, meaning 'noble' in old Indian and Persian languages, but in the 19th and 20th centuries racists, including the Nazis, wrongly used it to mean a 'superior' white Northern European and to hurt or exclude people, so that use is a harmful and false idea, not the word's original meaning.
