Etymology
Antilles comes from an old Spanish and Portuguese name Antilia that mapmakers used for a set of islands on early maps. One popular story links Antilia to the legend of Atlantis, which helps explain why the name stuck and today Antilles means the group of Caribbean islands called the West Indies.
