Etymology

Abyla is an ancient place name used by the Greeks and Romans for the tall rock on the Moroccan side of the Strait of Gibraltar. It probably comes from an older local name and became famous as one of the two 'Pillars of Hercules', so you can remember Abyla as the Moroccan 'pillar' standing opposite Gibraltar.
