Morphology

Bedloe's + island

This is a toponym: 'Bedloe's' is a proper name (not semantically transparent) and 'island' only signals a landform. Knowing the constituents does not allow a learner to infer the historical identity or that it is the former name of Liberty Island; that knowledge is encyclopedic and language-specific.

Etymology

Bedloe's Island is named after an early owner, a man called Isaac Bedloe, so people simply called that small island 'Bedloe's Island'. That's why older maps and records use 'Bedloe's Island' even though today the place is called 'Liberty Island' because of the Statue of Liberty.
