The word is built from the classical combining form ophthalmo- and the suffix -logy meaning 'study of', but the first element is specialized and not a common standalone English word.
Etymology
Ophthalmology comes from the Greek parts ophthalm- 'eye' and -logy 'study'. So it is like biology but for the eye: the branch of medicine that studies and treats eye problems.
