Morphology
anonymous = an + onym + ous
The meaning 'not named/without a name' follows directly from the productive negation prefix 'an-' and adjectival suffix '-ous'; the only potentially unfamiliar element is the combining form 'onym' (name), but the overall sense is directly inferable.
Etymology
Anonymous came from an- 'not' and name, so it originally meant 'without a name'. That's why we call a donor, letter, or source anonymous when the person's identity is not known.
