Etymology

Dhu'l-Hijjah comes from Arabic parts Dhu' meaning 'possessor' and Hijjah meaning 'pilgrimage', the same root as hajj. So, Dhu'l-Hijjah is the month 'of the pilgrimage', which is why the hajj happens then and Eid al-Adha is in this month.
